We generalize the concept of Nash equilibrium in mixed strategies for strategic form games to allow for ambiguity in the players' expectations. In contrast to other contributions, we model ambiguity by means of so-called lower probability measures or belief functions, which makes it possible to distinguish between a player's assessment of ambiguity and his attitude towards ambiguity. We also generalize the concept of trembling hand perfect equilibrium. Finally, we demonstrate that for certain attitudes towards ambiguity it is possible to explain (...) cooperation in the one-shot Prisoner's Dilemma in a way that is in accordance with some recent experimental findings. This paper uses a two-dimensional version of a standard common consequence experiment to test the intransitivity explanation of Allais-paradox-type violations of expected utility theory. We compare the common consequence effect of two choice problems differing only with respect to whether alternatives are statistically correlated or independent. We framed the experiment so that intransitive preferences could explain violating behavior when alternatives are independent, but not when they are correlated. We found the same pattern of violation in the two cases. This is (...) evidence against intransitivity as an explanation of the Allais Paradox. The question whether violations of expected utility are mainly due to intransitivity or to violation of independence is important since it is exactly on this issue the main new decision theories differ. We define an evolutionary process of “economic Darwinism” for playing the field, symmetric games. The process captures two forces. One is “economic selection”: if current behavior leads to payoff differences, behavior yielding lowest payoff has strictly positive probability of being replaced by an arbitrary behavior. The other is “mutation”: any behavior has at any point in time a strictly positive, very small probability of shifting to an arbitrary behavior. We show that behavior observed frequently is in accordance with “evolutionary equilibrium”, (...) a static equilibrium concept suggested in the literature. Using this result, we demonstrate that generally under positive (negative) externalities, economic Darwinism implies even more under- (over-)activity than does Nash equilibrium. (shrink)

John Rawls' bog En teori om retfærdighed er blandt de absolut vigtigste værker i det 20. århundredes politiske filosofi. Det udkom første gang i 1971 og markerede et brud med en udbredt skepsis over for normative politiske teorier, det vil sige teorier, om hvorledes samfundet bør være indrettet. Med en sofistikeret version af klassisk kontraktteori argumenterer Rawls for en socialliberal vision om retfærdighed, hvor enhver sikres en frihed, der er forenelig med alles tilsvarende frihed, hvor de økonomisk dårligst stillede skal (...) stilles bedst muligt. I nærværende antologi diskuterer en række forskere vigtige temaer i såvel det nævnte hovedværk, som hans øvrige forfatterskab. Bidragene introducerer derved ikke blot til Rawls' politiske filosofi, men også til diskussioner, der står helt centralt i nyere politisk teori såsom vores forhold til fremtidige generationer, civil ulydighed og global retfærdighed. Jörgen Jörgensen (1938) asks why there should not be a valid deduction even though the premises are imperatives (“Jörgensen’s Dilemma”). Robert Walter (1996; 9 Ratio Juris 168), following Hans Kelsen, thinks that there can be a valid deduction if the premises, although in prescriptive (including imperative) language, are actually descriptions of prescriptions. It is suggested that Walter then has his own dilemma: the more possible it is, for such descriptions to be valid, the less likely it is, that the (...) prescriptions described are illogical; Walter’s Dilemma is a species of Jörgensen’s. Fragen, keine unbefriedigten Bedürfnisse, keine ungesicherten Aussagen gäbe. In dieser Welt der Selbstverständlichkeit ist Philosophie noch nicht möglich oder nicht mehr nötig. Von Kants »Ding an sich± über die Schwarzen Löcher der Astronomen bis hin zum Zustand wunschlosen Glücks reichen Blumenbergs Vergleiche, die auf immer wieder überraschende Weise beleuchten, worin die Schwierigkeiten liegen, die Lebenswelt überhaupt zum Gegenstand von Erkenntnis zu machen. Es zeigt sich, daß die Beziehung zwischen Theorie und Lebenswelt in einer Erfahrung des Verlusts gesucht werden muß: Wissenschaft ist nichts anderes als der Versuch, mit den Folgen des Verschwindens von Selbstverständlichkeit fertig zu werden. It offers a personalized account of some of the central theoretical movements in literary studies and in the humanities over the past thirty years, together with an equally personal view of a possible future. Based on this assessment of the past and the future of literary studies and the humanities, the book develops the provocative thesis (...) that, through their exclusive dedication to interpretation, i.e. to the reconstruction and attribution of meaning, the humanities have become incapable of addressing a dimension in all cultural phenomena that is as important as the dimension of meaning. Interpretation alone cannot do justice to the dimension of "presence," a dimension in which cultural phenomena and cultural events become tangible and have an impact on our senses and our bodies. Although Bohr's reply to the EPR argument is supposed to be a watershed moment in the development of his philosophy of quantum theory, it is difficult to find a clear statement of the reply's philosophical point. Moreover, some have claimed that the point is simply that Bohr is a radical positivist. In this paper, we show that such claims are unfounded. In particular, we give a mathematically rigorous reconstruction of Bohr's reply to the _original_ EPR argument that clarifies its logical (...) structure, and which shows that it does not rest on questionable philosophical assumptions. Rather, Bohr's reply is dictated by his commitment to provide "classical" and "objective" descriptions of experimental phenomena. (shrink)

An idea going back to Plato’s Meno is that knowledge is stable. Recently, a seemingly stronger and more exciting thesis has been advanced, namely that rational belief is stable. I sketch two stability theories of knowledge and rational belief, and present an example intended to show that knowledge need not be stable and rational belief need not be stable either. The second claim does not follow from the first, even if we take knowledge to be a special kind of rational (...) belief. ‘Stability’ is an ambiguous term that has an internally conditional structure. As a relational concept, responsible innovation can be made more tangible by asking innovation of what and responsibility of whom for what? Arranging the scattered field of responsible innovation comprehensively, starting from an anthropological point of view, into five fields of tension and five categories of spearheads, may be theoretically and practically helpful while offering suggestions for both research and management.

In recent years, the relation between studying and learning has been a topic of debate. This article is mainly interested in a concept of study practices, conceived of as practices that are strongly engaged with issues of living together in a superdiverse city. Such practices firstly require to think the relation between studying and learning in other-than-oppositional terms, and secondly, to raise questions concerning the political role of education. The aim of the article is double in that it wants to (...) further elaborate the concept of study practices in relation to a concrete practice on the one hand, and, on the other, that it has the objective to rethink in educational terms the notion of solidarity—deeply entwined with matters of living together in superdiversity. These aims are pursued based on an analysis of the study practice of System_D, a film festival in the disadvantaged neighborhoods of Brussels, drawing on the work of Isabelle Stengers and Donna Haraway. _Political Poetry across the Centuries_ aims to give a concise yet wide ranging overview of political poetry from antiquity to the immediate past spanning from Europe to East Asia.

Die Erregung, mit der in den 1960er-Jahren der von Theodor Adorno und anderen so genannte „Positivismusstreit“ ausgetragen wurde, hat sich in den fast 50 Jahren, die vergangen sind, seit 1969 der Sammelband zur Debatte veröffentlicht wurde, weitgehend gelegt. Das macht es möglich, von der Parteinahme für die eine oder andere Seite Abstand zu nehmen und noch einmal präziser die Argumente von damals zu durchdenken. Es zeigt sich, dass in der Diskussion zwischen Karl Popper und Theodor Adorno in Tübingen 1961 die (...) Gemeinsamkeiten die Divergenzen bei weitem überwogen. Erst mit dem Eintritt on Jürgen Habermas und Hans Albert in die Debatte kam eine polemische Schärfe in die Diskussion, zum Teil durch die Etikettierung der Position Poppers als „Positivismus“ durch Habermas und dann auch Adorno. Zusätzlich wird hier versucht, die Debatte der 1960er-Jahre dadurch zu historisieren, dass sie in einen weiteren Zeitrahmen eingebettet wird, der einerseits die weit in die 1920er- und 1930er-Jahre reichende Vorgeschichte des Streits sowie andererseits die Folgen der Auseinandersetzung seit den späten 1960er-Jahren einbezieht.Die Darstellung beruht auf früheren Arbeiten des Verfassers. Zusätzlich werden einige neue Archivfunde präsentiert und inzwischen erschienene Autobiografien bzw. Biografien der Beteiligten des Positivismusstreits ausgewertet. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass sich in Zukunft die bislang nicht zugänglichen Teile des Briefwechsels zwischen Adorno und Popper noch auffinden lassen. (shrink)
